You may need to take blood pressure medicine for the rest of your life. But your doctor might be able to reduce or stop your treatment if your blood pressure stays under control for several years. It's really important to take your medicine as directed. If you miss doses, it will not work as well.

If your high blood pressure is due to non-modifiable factors like family history or variable ones (such as chronic disease), you may not be able to stop taking your medication. This is especially true for older adults, as age is an independent risk factor for hypertension and tends to be associated with greater complexities in managing chronic illness.

As you slim down, it may be possible to reduce your dose of blood pressure medication — or stop taking your blood pressure medication completely. Don't make changes to your blood pressure medication on your own, however. Do so only after getting your doctor's OK. Remember, high blood pressure isn't a problem you can treat and then ignore.

Do not play doctor and begin or stop taking high blood pressure medicines on your own. These medications can have serious results if taken lightly. Hence, be safe than sorry and take the prescribed medicines regularly if they suit you or get them changed quickly if you are allergic to them. Your Comments.

Catapres tablets and Catapres-TTS patches are used to treat high blood pressure. Stopping them abruptly may result in a surge of stress hormones such as epinephrine (adrenaline), norepinephrine (noradrenaline), and dopamine. You can also experience very high blood pressure (known as a “rebound” effect), so clonidine should be weaned slowly. If you’ve been on higher doses of clonidine, rebound high blood pressure is more likely to occur.
