Anti-nausea medications.

Cerenia® (a veterinary-specific prescription medication) and dimenhydrinate (brand names: Dramamine® or Gravol®), and meclizine (brand names: Antivert® and Bonine®). These anti-nausea medications can prevent vomiting in a stressed pet. A single dose of Cerenia® lasts 24 hours.

Unlike cats, dogs can take Cerenia tablets to prevent the associated symptoms of motion sickness. Experts recommend giving your dog the appropriate dosage of Cerenia 2 hours prior to getting into the car. Make sure to give the medication with a small amount of food to prevent an upset stomach.

Your veterinarian may recommend giving your dog Pepto-Bismol, Pepcid or another over-the-counter medication to help combat nausea. Diphenhydramine (Benadryl) is often helpful in treating nausea, motion sickness and a variety of skin issues. Dramamine or Bonine are also useful for dogs suffering from motion sickness.

It has also been suggested that peppermint can help vomiting in dogs although, like all home remedies, check with your vet before giving it to your dog. If your dog has been nauseous for a few days or more, or he has been vomiting once or twice a week for more than a week, there may be a more serious cause behind his illness.

MiraLAX can be given to your pet in small doses to help alleviate the pain and discomfort of constipation, Meeks says. While it’s relatively safe, you’ll want to work with your veterinarian to determine the proper dosage. Too much can lead to an upset stomach and diarrhea.
