Posted: February 1, 2021 While the Medical Expense Tax Credit can significantly reduce your taxes, it is not always obvious which medical expenses are eligible. Payments of premiums for private health service plans may qualify if they meet certain criteria, while others are excluded.

You're Self-Employed. If you’re self-employed, your health insurance premiums may be deductible. If you’re self-employed and not eligible for an employer-sponsored health plan through your spouse’s job (or another job that you hold), you may be able to write-off your health insurance premiums.

If you are self-employed, you may be eligible to deduct premiums that you pay for medical, dental and qualifying long-term care insurance coverage for yourself, your spouse and your dependents. This health insurance write-off is entered on page 1 of Form 1040 , which means you benefit whether or not you itemize your deductions.

If you are able to write-off your health insurance, there are limits to how much of your premiums you can write off when you are not self-employed. If you’re able to claim your health insurance as a medical expense deduction, you can only deduct medical expenses if you itemize your deductions and they exceed 7.5% of your adjusted gross income.

You have to do the following calculation for each dependant. Step 1. Add up the total amount that you, or your spouse or common-law partner paid in 2020 for eligible medical expenses. Step 2. Find out which amount is less between: 3% of your dependant's net income or; $2,397; Step 3. Subtract the lesser amount from Step 2 from the amount from Step 1.

For 2021, you can claim up to the full credit if your MAGI is $59,000 or less for single filers and $119,000 or less for joint filers. Then the maximum credit you can claim is reduced as your MAGI increases. You can’t claim the LLC once your MAGI reaches $69,000 for single filers or $139,000 for joint filers.
