To keep their coverage, a federal employee must have been covered by FEHB for five years before they retire. There is an exception to the five-year rule for those who obtained coverage as soon as they were qualified to do so, and you are also allowed to have taken certain breaks from service.

Unfortunately, federal employees do not receive free health insurance upon retirement. However, federal employees can keep their current federal employee health benefits (FEHB) plan upon retirement. Employees continue to pay the employee portion of the premium .

Your FEHB coverage (Federal Employees Health Benefits) is an important benefit while you’re working, and if you meet the eligibility rules, you and your spouse can keep the benefit for the rest of your lives in retirement. Bonus: the share of cost remains the same, too.

FEHB law requires a retiring employee to be covered under FEHB for the 5 years of service immediately before retirement or, if less than 5 years, for all service since the employee’s first opportunity to enroll in FEHB.

Government workers and retirees are enrolled in a program called the Federal Employee Health Benefits Program (FEHB). It’s the world’s largest employer-sponsored group health insurance program. The FEHB is operated by the U.S. Office of Personnel Management for those who qualify.

In order for federal employees to be eligible to keep FEHB in retirement, they must have been covered under FEHB for at least five years immediately preceding their retirement, and they also must be enrolled in it on the day that they retire.
