Interestingly, research published in 2017 also suggests that iron deficiency can contribute to the development of hypothyroidism. This is because iron is central to the production of both red blood cells and thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH). Patients report avoiding swallowing iron at the same time as thyroid pills, since the iron will bind to some of the thyroid hormones as they mix in your stomach and bind some thyroid hormones. They might take their T3 or desiccated thyroid one hour before iron is taken, or several hours later…or try their best to keep them apart somehow.

Iron is required for thyroid hormone production due to its effects on heme-dependent thyroid peroxidase. In addition, low iron has been shown to impact the effects of iodine supplementation (5). Meaning the lower your iron levels are the less likely you are to utilize iodine if you are supplementing with it.

Iron is a component of vitamins which inhibit thyroid medication absorption. The interaction occurs when iron binds to a thyroid medicine in your stomach. When this happens, your body may not be able to absorb your thyroid medication. This doesn’t mean you should not take iron.

Approximately 60 to 80% of thyroid hormone T 4 is absorbed within 2 – 4 hours after ingestion on an empty stomach. Here are medicines that will interfere with thyroid hormone absorption: Proton-pump inhibitors (PPIs) such as Nexium, Protonix, Prilosec generally will lower absorption and cause a need to increase thyroid dosing. Like hormones, minerals like iron and calcium can bind to thyroid hormone and inhibit absorption. A good rule of thumb: “Take your thyroid hormone first thing in the morning, on an empty stomach, and take multivitamins and other supplements at lunch, at least 4 hours later,” suggests Levy.
