Scabies will not go away on its own. It can only be cured with prescription medications that kill the mites. Treatment is a cream or lotion that is applied to the entire body from the neck down in most cases.

It's extremely hard to believe the scabies are gone when the itching and bumps last for so long (especially with these forums where people tell you scabies live in your walls and you have to bathe in bleach to get rid of them). It was a long haul, but they did go away with just the average treatment.

Scabies mites do not survive more than 2-3 days away from human skin. Items such as bedding, clothing, and towels used by a person with scabies can be decontaminated by machine-washing in hot water and drying using the hot cycle or by dry-cleaning.

I was treated for scabies and I’m wondering how long it will take for the bumps to go away? Q: A: The more important thing is to know you were treated adequately to kill the scabies so you are free of the infection and won’t give it to others. When the actual bumps go away varies, but 2-3 weeks is usual.

If you get scabies, you should visit your doctor for a prescription that will treat the condition. Over-the-counter and home remedies will not completely remove the mites that cause scabies. In the meantime, you can relieve the itching with over-the-counter oral antihistamines or topical treatments like calamine lotion.

With young infants, you may skip medications if the affected skin is not severely wetted by drainage fluids from the blisters, and the infants do not seem to be very uncomfortable. You can also skip oral medications when the skin disorder appears on adults’ skin, since the patient should be able to practice proper hygiene practice to improve the condition and is required with or without antibiotics.

Medicines: Prescription creams are used to treat scabies. You will need to apply them over all of your body from the neck down. Do not swallow this medicine. An oral medication may be ordered if scabies is severe. Take your medicine as directed. Contact your healthcare provider if you think your medicine is not helping or if you have side effects.

If you’ve had scabies before, you might develop symptoms after just a few days of being exposed to the mites. But if you’ve never had it, you may not have any symptoms for up to 6 weeks.
