I was on day 8 of a 10 day prescription and the doctor said it doesn't matter that I was almost finished with my course of antibiotics because while alcohol doesn't directly cause the antibiotics to not be effective, it does lower your bodies ability to fight and get better because the alcohol is metabolized in a similar way as the medicine, which means that the alcohol and the antibiotics are competing with each other.

There were no antibiotics or antivirals in 1918, leaving the door open for a range of treatments from aspirin and strychnine (a poison famously featuring in thrillers by Agatha Christie and Ian Fleming) to Horlicks, Vicks Vaporub and, yes, whisky.
